The Canadian Human Rights Voice applauds today’s apology to LGBTQ2 Canadians by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on behalf of all Canadians.

The LGBT community has historically been the subject of prosecution and discrimination in the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP and Federal Public Service. The campaign to identify and purge LGBT Federal Public Servants on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression in the Federal Public Service and military began in the 1950’s and continued for decades.

Today’s formal apology by the Prime Minister for “the persecution and injustices they have suffered” also came with a commitment “to advance together on the path to equality and inclusion.”

CHRV applauds today’s announcement and is particularly proud today as our Director Todd Ross stood in the House of Commons with other LGBT veterans to receive the apology. We congratulate Todd on his continued service to Canada and human rights.
